Nevada eTax Not Proceeding
Nevada has just closed out a Special Session designed to find enough money to get the state through 2010. One of the issues under consideration was an "amazon" style tax on affiliate marketers.
The bill didn't get off the ground, so for now Nevada remains a good state for affiliate marketers to operate in. However, the next regular government session begins in January of 2011, and there's no guarantee the issue won't arise again.
This is despite the fact that all states who jumped on the bandwagon after New York have reported receiving NO additional income as a result of this legislation.
There are reports that NY has received $50m, but I don't know if that is true. I saw the $50m amount tossed around when the legislation was under consideration, as the potential amount a tax would raise. But most businesses cancelled their affiliate relationships with NY marketers as soon as the legislation passed, rather than comply with collections.
Even if that amount is correct, it's not a guaranteed win for the state. Amazon and other retailers are collecting the tax under protest. The matter is still winding its way through the appeal courts system, and will have to be returned if NY loses.
